Caroline Mary Gumowski, age 85 of Warren, died Saturday, March 25, 2017 at St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital, Macomb Center in Warren. She was born May 13, 1931 in Detroit, daughter of the late Joseph and the late Veronica (nee: Malinowski) Kochanski.
In telling the story of Caroline, one of the most endearing aspects would definitely have to be the loving relationship she shared with the man she called her soul mate, Mr. Benjamin Gumowski. He and Caroline enjoyed a wonderful life together,…through the good & bad alike,…as a testament to the reality that true and abiding love is the fabric of which a lasting relationship is woven. And if you were to have asked Caroline what her greatest riches were, the instant answer would have been her children. For both she and Benjamin, they couldn't have been more blessed than they were with the little angels God placed in their care.
Along with caring for her loving family, Caroline also made her mark in the work world as well. In her earlier years, one of her first dips into the pool of employment began as a retail clerk at a local dime store. How many remember the old dime stores? But that's where she began to find her way. Her next step found her heading more into the deeper end of the pool when she accepted a position with the automotive giant, the Chrysler Corporation. It was there that Caroline attained some of the more professional and business acumen that would assist her as she grew closer to her visions of success.
Caroline was also known for her artistic talents and gifts. One of these involved a proclivity for all things ceramic, a genre of art for which she possessed both incredible skills and natural abilities. So much so that she not only produced some wonderful works of art, she also helped teach the process as well. Another of Caroline's artistic flairs was found in the amazing arrangements of silk flowers she created. Possessing just the right mix of visualizing the colors and varieties of flowers, she managed to put together some beautiful and breathtaking floral displays in her day. Though her arrangements covered a host of different needs and desires, it was through her many wedding arrangements that her talent truly shined.
But ultimately, it was about a dream she held for the longest time that she never lost sight of and forever held out hope for,…and on one magical day decided to leave the pool behind and leap into the Lake of Opportunity as she answered the call of entrepreneurialism by opening her own business, Karol's Kreations. It was more than merely a dream come true, it was a venue for her to share and express herself through a gift shop environment that touched countless caring customers and afforded them a outlet with a plethora of possibilities.
Many will also remember what a devout woman of faith she was, and how Caroline revered her Lord and did her utmost to live a life worthy of God's acceptance. A longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church (formerly St. Cletus) in Warren, it instilled Caroline with great pride and humility to think that she was blessed to be one of the churches founding members. Much of the mark the church had upon its community, chances are it had Caroline's fingerprints on it to some degree.
Being the matriarch of a large and loving family, she had many looking up to her and always did her best to set the right example on the importance of living a life of faith. Caroline possessed a tremendously giving heart and was an absolute joy to be around. She was always the first to volunteer,…be it through her time, her talents, or her prayerful support, Caroline was the kind of person you could always count on,…and she never let you down.
Caroline's work history provided her much of her greatest pride,…her faith brought her much of her greatest strength,…and it was her family that gave her the greatest joys of all. Family always came first, and they could forever be assured that the love Caroline extended was of the unconditional kind. Whether through her cooking, crafting, babysitting, socializing, or just plain loving, Caroline emanated all the finest attributes that can be attested to such a "caregiver extraordinaire."
Another testimony to a person's life can often be found in the special aspects that define the family they leave. For Caroline, it's the incredible guidance and discipline she managed to pass down through her children, which got passed down to theirs, and ultimately churned out 4 grandsons who have achieved extraordinary heights by becoming Eagle Scouts. To have just ONE of these grandbabies attain this pinnacle of scouting success would be something to gloriously applaud. But to have FOUR of them don the same honor is nothing short of miraculous! (Since I know you're looking down as I scribe these words,…Great Job, Caroline!)
A loving wife, mother and grandmother, she leaves behind a legacy of love that is sure to be embraced with each reflection shared. Through her talents, faith and love, Caroline touched a multitude of hearts and souls in her journey through life and impacted countless lives with her smile and care. She will be missed immensely and loved eternally.
Caroline was the beloved wife of the late Benjamin. Dearest mother of Elaine (Marty) Heitkamp, Janet (Dave) Robertjohn, Karen (Tom) Savage, and Mark (Maria) Gumowski. Loving grandmother "Nana" of Melissa (Dennis) Faustich, Kayla (John) Hammell, Martin Heitkamp, Eric Heitkamp, Garret Gumowski, Nicolas Gumowski, Rachel Gumowski, and great-grandmother of Tyler, Samantha, Grady, Benjamin, Lucas, and Wyatt. Sister of Helen Doerr, and sister-in-law of Dorothy Gumowski.
Visitation for Caroline will be held Tuesday, March 28th from 3-9pm, with a 6pm Rosary Service, at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 ½ Mile Rd) in Warren. She will lie in state on Wednesday from 9:30 am until time of the Funeral Masscontinued...
