Heart Emblem

Eleanore Elizabeth Toporowski, age 91 of Warren, died Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at the Fr. Murray Nursing Center in Center Line, Michigan.

She was born July 4, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan, daughter of the late Andrew and the late Cecelia (nee: Opalewski) Miela.

On the 9th day of June in the summer of '51, Miss Eleanore Elizabeth Miela took her beloved Walter to be her wedded husband in the eyes of family and friends alike. Following their "I Do's" and the party afterwards, the newlyweds headed off to their honeymoon amidst the beauty and grandeur of Niagara Falls. Known as one of the nation's prominent newlywed destinations, it was the perfect setting for this loving couple to celebrate their marriage, the heartfelt promises shared, and the beginning of their lives together as husband & wife. From building upon the comforts of home & hearth, to raising two beautiful girls, these lovebirds went on to share over 57 wonderful years growing deeper in love with each passing day.

With Niagara Falls being their first official vacation spot as a married couple, it left such an impression that it became a favorite vacation destination that graced their marriage for many years to follow. And though it may have only been a destination of her dreams, the magic of Disney enveloped Eleanore's heart and soul and eternally brought out the kid in her,…as evidenced by her immense collection of the iconic favorite, Mickey Mouse. They may have merely been stuffed dolls, but still represented the Emissary of the Magic Kingdom to Eleanore, and the child-like joy that Mickey always seems to infuse in the hearts of children, both big and small.

A longtime member of Warren's, St. Sylvester Catholic Church, Eleanore was devoted to her faith and often known for her giving and compassionate spirit,…as in the countless occasions when she purchased stuffed animals and toys for various children's homes. Bringing happiness to the hearts of God's little ones was just one of the many outreaches that poured from Eleanore's life as a Christian, and a ministry that she treasured immensely. And not so much a ministry as it was recreational, Eleanore spent many years hosting BINGO at the Sanctuary at the Abbey Nursing Center in Warren, an outreach to the community that she and some of her church friends enjoyed beyond measure.

As for those special moments when she found a little "me time" in the day, Eleanore was known for her love of solving Jumble puzzles. Whether from the newspaper or the many puzzle books supplied to her over the years, the Jumbles kept Eleanore entertained for hours on end, and her mind exceptionally sharp.

Another of Eleanore's great loves was found in the pleasure of food,…she loved a good hamburger! Cooked just right and smothered with all the proper fixin's, she always enjoyed the tasty delight of sinking her teeth into a Bonanza of Beef. Nothing says happy like a satisfied belly, and hamburgers were definitely the way to her heart.

But little could hold a candle to the pleasures she found in her love of dogs,…specifically the late "Cherokee," her adorable yellow Lab. Known for their docile nature, Cherokee was more than merely her furry, four-legged friend,…he was a Companion of Compassion that afforded Eleanore the perfect source of unconditional love just when she needed it.

A loving wife and mother, Eleanore touched a multitude of hearts and souls in her journey through life, and leaves behind a unique legacy as a servant of God and a friend to many. May she rest in peace.

Eleanore was the beloved wife of the late Walter. Dear mother of Christine Marie Toporowski and Mary Toporowski. She was preceded in death by siblings; Harold Miela, Dorothy Miela, and Eugene Miela.

A Memorial Mass for Eleanore will be held Friday, September 21st at St. Malachy Catholic Church in Sterling Heights, Michigan. The family welcomes guests from 10:30 am until the time of Mass at 11:00 am. Officiating the funeral liturgy will be Fr. Joe Gembala.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home in Warren, Michigan.
