Frieda Gunningham, age 96, a longtime resident of St. Clair Shores and Warren, died Saturday, September 30, 2017 at the Villa Bella Senior Living facility in Clinton Township, Michigan.

Frieda was born, literally, during her family's move from Russia to the United States on September 25, 1921. She was the daughter of Henry and Minnie Windemuth.

The Windemuth family settled in the Detroit, the same area Frieda was raised, attended school, and eventually married. Frieda became a widow at a young age with the death of her first husband. However, as fate would have it, Frieda found work within the St. Clair Shores Police Department as a secretary to the Police Chief. It was while working in the same building as the Fire Department that afforded Frieda the chance meeting with her eventual husband, Richard Gunningham.

Frieda, and husband Richard, lived in St. Clair Shores, then Warren, and eventually back to St. Clair Shores during the course of their marriage. Frieda and Richard enjoyed their retirement years golfing and traveling. Much of Frieda's time was spent doting on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She tried to attend as many of the children's activities and sporting events as her time would allow. In addition to cherishing her family, Frieda was a die-hard Red Wings fan, as well as an all-round sports fan, too. Quiet time at home would find Frieda sewing many different items including her always sought after Christmas stockings.

Frieda was the beloved wife of the late Richard Gunningham, and also predeceased by her first husband Eugene Louis Koprowski. She was the cherished mother of Cheryl (Ed Fagan) Kowalczyk, Pam (Doug) Shaw, Martin (Karin) Gunningham, Denise Schoenherr, Gene (Dave) Gray, Chuck Koprowski, and the late Marie and Eugene. Mrs. Gunningham is further survived by her twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Private cremation arrangements have been entrusted to D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home in Warren, Michigan.

Please share memories of Frieda at her memory book above.
