Gerald Lee Kamps, age 61 of Warren, died Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital, Macomb Center in Warren. Gerald was born February 7, 1956 in Holland, Michigan, son of the late Jay R. and the late Marjorie H. Kamps-Caswell (Mattison).

Born and raised in the beautiful community of Holland, Michigan, Gerald was a proud graduate of the Class of 1974 from the city's educative namesake, Holland High School. It was a couple years later, in 1976, that his heart was calling him to the service of our country, so Gerald proudly enlisted in our great U.S. Army where he would serve for 8 years.

So it is, with thanks and praise from a grateful nation that we pay homage to Gerald for his unselfish and patriotic desire to serve our country, and his willingness to stand in harm's way for the sake and cause of freedom. For Gerald's bravery and valiance in performing the duties set before him, we extend our posthumous gratitude and honor his distinguished service to America.

Following his military service, Gerald moved to the breathtaking state of Washington where he lived for a short time until his heart beckoned him back home to Holland. After returning to Michigan, Gerald gained employment as a regional truck driver and drove a semi-tractor trailer for many years until accepting his well-deserved retirement.

For a bit of recreation away from work, Gerald found great enjoyment in sitting around the television screen and being entertained by some of his favorite movies and TV shows. With a cold drink, something tasty to snack on, and his trusty remote control in hand, Gerald could easily keep engrossed for hours feeding his appetite for cinematic pleasures. Ah, but there was another type of "screen entertainment" of which he partook,…the computer screen. Gerald was quite astute with his machine and spent many-an-hour getting educated and informed through its bevy of knowledge.

For more of an active outlet, Gerald's younger years were filled with many occasions of playing in two of his favorite sports,…Volleyball and Wally-Ball. He not only reaped the benefits of the exercise it provided, but also reveled in the camaraderie & friendship aspects it held as well. Family and friends meant the world to Gerald, especially when they were getting all sweaty together tossing the ball over the net. Yet of all his favorite things and pastimes enjoyed, right there toward the top of the list was his adoration for his Jeeps. Gerald owned and drove them for years, held them in the highest regard (as vehicles go), and simply had a blast each time he got behind the wheel of his iconic brand of motoring.

Gone far too soon from our presence, Gerald leaves behind a storehouse of wonderful memories for all to draw upon who were lucky and blessed to know him. He will be missed immensely and loved eternally.

Gerald was the father of Roger Scott (Suzanne) Kamps and Ryan Kamps-King. Brother of Kaye Hill, the late Roger J., and Joanne M. White. Also survived by many other loving family members.
