Helen Kokal, age 78, died Saturday, August 5, 2017 at the Autumn Woods Health Care Facility in Warren. Michigan. Helen was born April 26, 1939 in New York City, New York, daughter of the late Fred Austinat and the late Mary (nee: Symanek) Austinat.

Born in Jamaica neighborhood in New York City, on April 26, 1939, Helen was somewhere between the ages of 3 & 4 when her parents decided to make Detroit their new home. Helen would recall how she and her Austinat family entered through one of Detroit's iconic landmark's, the Michigan Central Train Station downtown.

As she made her way through the teen years, life would take on a new and special meaning when she met a handsome young man by the name of Walter, who would eventually become her loving husband and soul mate. Married on September 26, 1957 at the New Apostolic Church in Detroit, it was quite the fitting venue when considering the church is where they met and began the journey which set them on the path towards love. For the first couple years of their marriage they lived in Detroit's Mack Park area, until 1960, then moved to the Detroit suburb of Warren. It is there that Helen & Walter would welcome their two sons into the world, Steven and Robert.

Helen was a loving homemaker, and also worked a few years as medical biller for her brother-in-law. Helen's faith was an important part of her life that she held close and fervently.

Helen and Walt took their young family camping the the Canadian Rocky Mountains, often including extended family members. She enjoyed sewing, reading, and caring for her family.

A loving wife & mother, Helen leaves behind a storehouse of precious memories of the many hearts and souls she touched throughout her journey in life. She will truly be missed and remembered in love.

Helen was the beloved wife of Walter, and the loving mother of Bob (Michele) Kokal and Steven (Janine) Kokal. Mrs. Kokal was the cherished grandmother of Joseph, Kristie, Kathleen, Emilee, and Teresa. She is also survived by many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Kokal was preceded in death by her siblings, Joanne Austinat, Linda Salvia and Freddie Austinat.

Visitation for Mrs. Kokal will be held Thursday, August 10th from 3-6 pm, with her evening Funeral Services beginning at 6pm, at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 1/2 Mile Road) in Warren. Officiating the Funeral will be Pastor Timothy Rettberg.
