Joseph Frank Barnes, age 80, died Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at Beaumont Hospital in Troy, Michigan. Joseph was born May 29, 1937 in Ferndale, Michigan, son of the late Robert Barnes and the late Anna (nee: Essick) Barnes.

Joseph was raised in Ferndale and later in Walled Lake, Michigan. He graduated from Walled Lake High School and later entered the United States Air Force where he served faithfully and honorably for four years before returning home to continue his education.

Joseph used his GI education grant from his military service to achieve a Masters Degree in special education. He worked as an educator for over 30 years, employed within the Cherry Hill District and later for the Wayne-Westland District from which he eventually retired.

In retirement, Joseph and his wife moved to their Torch Lake retirement home enjoying the beauty of northern Michigan. The couple also traveled to many parts of the United States. Joseph was an avid and active sports enthusiast in his youth, and later in life continued playing sports,...especially golf. He was also a tremendous sports fan and could be found at home relaxing watching one of his favorite Detroit sports teams.

Joseph was the beloved husband of Lorraine G. Knight and the dear father of Peter (Shannon) Barnes, Jennifer Barnes, Matthew (Ana) Barnes, Nicole Barnes, Scott (Kara) Sawaya, and Susan (Jeff) Knoblauch. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; Christopher, Jessica, Erich, Ashley, Makenna "Jory", Shaina, Alia, Mimi, Marcelo, Isabella, Maren, and Ethan. Mr. Barnes is further survived by many dear relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings.

A Memorial Service will be held in the Spring in northern Michigan. Arrangements have been entrusted to D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home in Warren, Michigan.
