Michael John Rivard, age 71, died Thursday, March 1, 2018 in Warren, Michigan. Michael was born January 11, 1947 in Highland Park, Michigan, son of the late Lawrence and Sophia (nee: Vukajlovich) Rivard. He grew up in the Detroit area where he graduated High School and went on to join the Navy in 1966, serving 2 tours until ultimately receiving his honorable discharge in 1976. Michael later joined the Air Force Reserves and retired in 1993. During his younger years, Michael was involved in the Serbian community, the YMCA, sports, cars, music and playing the guitar. Michael had a passion for music and continued to play the guitar all these years later!

He married Jane Winters in 1979 in Portland, Oregon, then headed down to Los Angeles, California where Michael got a job with the Immigration and Naturalization Service (long before Homeland Security existed) and the Internal Revenue Service as well. After a few years they returned to Portland, Oregon where they lived for many years. Jane worked at Kaiser Permanente and Michael worked in Hotel Security until Jane became ill and passed away in 2009. He then went on to become a Private Investigator in the Portland area, and just recently became licensed in Michigan.

In 2010, he took the vacation of a lifetime…traveling on a tour of the Country Roads of the Balkans, Dalmatia and the Adriatic. He finally got to visit places he had heard about his whole life, ate wonderful food, listened to local music and dancing, and got to visit the town where his maternal grandparents lived.

Michael traveled to Jackson, California to visit relatives, toured around Florida, but eventually returned to Michigan in 2015. He felt like he was coming home again. He resided in Warren and found community with the Serbian church, was a Junior Vice-Commander with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6250, along with being a Silver Legacy Lifetime member. He also was a member of the Macomb County Council Ritual Team VFW and volunteered at the Army Garrison and Fitness Center.

Michael is predeceased by his wife and is survived by his younger brother, Wayne. Michael joins his parents Lawrence and Sophia, brothers Dean and Douglas. May he rest in Peace.

Visitation for Michael will be held Thursday, March 8th from 5-9 pm, with a 7 pm Pomen Service & a VFW Poppy service at 7:30 pm, at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 1/2 Mile) in Warren. Mr. Rivard will lie in state on Friday, 9:30 am at St. Lazarus Serbian Orthodox Church until the time of the Funeral Service at 10:00 am. Officiating the Funeral Services will be Reverend Fr. Zivan Urosev. Interment will follow the Funeral at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan. Michael will be honored with full military burial honors.
