Nellie Louise Gondek, age 97 of Sterling Heights, Michigan died Saturday, May 26, 2018 at the Church of Christ Care Center in Clinton Township, Michigan. Nellie was born August 16, 1920 in West Virginia, the daughter and fifth child of the late John and the late Mary (nee: Kantor) Uryga.

Nellie was extremely proud of her West Virginia roots and esteemed to be the daughter of a coal miner. She cherished hearing John Denver's song "Country Roads" which referenced West Virginia. She attended school until the fourth grade, only stopping her education to assist her mother to care for her siblings.

Nellie would later marry John Gondek and the two newlyweds settled in the Detroit area of Michigan. Nellie was a caregiver her entire life...not only to her siblings, but later to her husband, mother in-law, and her son, Tommy. In addition to caring for her family members, Nellie also cared for her close friends, the Dudek family children. Nellie's home was a consistent bevy of activity full of fun, food, and beverages. Nellie was forever thankful of all her blessings even though some would say she had a difficult life, she never complained "why me".

Nellie created fun celebrations at every family event and holiday for her family and grandchildren. At Easter she had the "Guess the Jelly Beans in the jar" contest,...and during Christmas, it was M&M candies. She was creative in her giving of gifts during the holidays and always made sure everyone received something, large or small. Nellie was a simple woman not full of wealth, but a woman who was selfless. putting others needs ahead of her own. If she witnessed something wrong her usual phrase was "Oh dear Jesus", and if she witnessed something bad or really wrong it became "Dear Sweet Jesus". In addition to her deep and devout faith, Nellie was also a proud member to the St. Monica's Guild for Mothers.

After more than 97 years on Earth, Nellie rejoins her family members, husband, John, her son Tommy who died May 1st, 2018, and her son Stanley and daughter-in-law Susan, in Heaven. She always felt blessed even though she carried many crosses during her life. And now she will be rewarded in Heaven with a well deserved Crown.

Nellie was the beloved wife of the late John Gondek, and the dearest mother of Jeanne (Dennis) Walkowicz, the late Stanley (Susan) Gondek, and the late Thomas Gondek. She was the loving grandmother of Beth (Bill) Steiger, Karen (Dr. Paul) Krajewski, Jill (Dr. Peter) Hammer, Kathryn (Kurt) Harvey, Kristen (Matthew) Topper, Todd (Kimberly) Gondek, and great-grandmother of Nathaniel, Darah, Greta, Henry, Chloe, Gabriel, Natasha, Audrey, Gracie, Max, Siena, Jaden, Jacob, Laurel, and Chase.
