Patriotic Emblem

Nicholas Matthew Bahnweg, age 77 of Harsens Island, died Friday, July 27, 2018 at Ascension St. John Hospital & Medical Center in Detroit. Nick was born August 2, 1940 in Molidorf, Yugoslavia, son of the late Joseph and the late Katherine (nee: Schuster) Bahnweg.

With a friendly face and that flashy smile, Nick warmed the doors of many familiar restaurants and markets throughout Detroit and its surrounding suburbs touting some of the finest seafood products for them to sell and serve. A fish salesman for over 30 years, Nick poured his heart and soul into bringing the best to the table for his clients, and their consumers, and was only stopped due to health challenges. He could have gone on another 30 years, if not for the need of attending to his health, but his marketing legacy certainly did. He made a plethora of wonderful friendships in his selling days, friendships that have lasted far beyond his career visits.

Since Nick was resigned to layin' low and not hitting the road each day, he and Cheryl decided they wanted to answer the call of a long-awaited dream,…and relocated to the Boater's Haven of Harsens Island. Nestled off the coast of the Michigan's eastern shore, and just south of Algonac, lies a stretch of land that houses a host of "Islander's" who adore their bit of seclusion, and the amenities that accompany the islands unique offerings. It was a lifestyle that Nick ate up, fell in love with, and wore like a warm and comfortable sweater. He already had a myriad of wonderful friends prior to moving on the island, but the morning walks he was so passionate about and faithful to opened up the doors to a host of new and exciting friendships and neighbors that made his island experience that much more special.

Many will also recall how Nick was passionate about his garden as well. Possessing a green thumb and the tender-loving-care of a consummate horticulturalist, Nick poured his heart into nurturing its growth and making it a thing of beauty for all to enjoy. And sometimes, exuding all of that knowledge and expertise can require a bit of "liquid encouragement,"…something he tapped into each day at 4 o'clock when sharing Happy Hour with his beloved, Cheryl. Yes, island life in Michigan was quite fun and invigorating for Nick,…right up to the point that the winter winds began to blow and he heard the summons from the Sunshine State to "come on down!" So down Nick & Cheryl went to their Snowbird Sanctuary in New Smyrna Beach, Florida to bask in the sun & fun on the eastern shore of nirvana. When the snow was pelting the Mitten, they could think of nowhere better to be than the Florida coastline, their winter home away from home.

Nick was a proud American who loved his country, loved his freedom, and stood tall for all the flag represented. He was also a dedicated husband, father and grandfather who cared deeply for family and enjoyed each memorable moment shared with those he loved. From home, to work, and the many walks of life in which he was known, Nick leaves behind a loving and happy legacy to the people who shared his journey and made it so worthwhile. He touched a multitude of hearts and souls along the way, and impacted many with his passion and zeal for life. He will be missed immensely and loved eternally.

Nick was the beloved husband of Cheryl. Treasured father of Nick (Christine) Bahnweg, Chris (Artie) Johnson, and Lara (Jonathan) Hayes. Loving grandfather of Nicole, Max, Riley, Natalie, Mason, and Jacob. Brother-in-law of Pamela Barns. Dearest uncle of Whitney (Rob) Starrs, and Godfather of Cheryl Ostin. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

A Memorial Service, in celebration of Nick's life, will be held at a later date. Please check back for updates.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 ½ Mile Rd.) in Warren.

Please share memories of Nick at his guest book above.
